You’ve probably heard of Reiki, but do you know what it is and what it does? Whether you have had it or not, Valentine’s Day is a great time to give yourself some love by exploring this ancient Japanese technique that aids in stress relief, relaxation, and promotes healing.

The word Reiki (usually pronounced ray-key in the US) is made up of two Japanese words. Rei means “the higher power” and ki which is “life force energy. Put them together and you have “spiritually guided life force energy.” Many people who have had it done are surprised at how effective it can be.

How can Reiki help me?

When your life energy is low, you will feel sluggish. You may get sick more often. It’s possible that you feel constantly stressed and unable to stay focused. Some people describe feeling like they are blocked or that something is off, but they can’t figure out exactly what it is.

On the other hand, when your life energy is high, you feel happy and healthy. People describe being more confident, motivated, and sure footed.

Water House Wellness Reiki Master, Janelle, has a metaphor for the practice, “I like to describe to my clients that we want our bodies and energy constantly in a flowing state. Think of a river that you want to easily flow. When energy becomes stuck or stagnant, it becomes a dam in that river, blocking the flow. Reiki helps to remove those blocks so that your energy flows freely again.”

Janelle feels that her job is to help release physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual trauma trapped in the body or subconscious. Her goal is to free as much as possible to reduce everyday stress to keep you healthy so you live a longer (and happier) life.

When we aren’t in a constant state of stress, our bodies heal faster. Reiki can help with simple things such as headaches, joint pain, muscle aches, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia. It can also help with creativity if you are having a block.

Reiki is also creeping its way into mainstream medicine. Many hospitals now offer (or even require) Reiki for patients who are dealing with serious conditions such as cancer, end of life, and problems with blood pressure. It can also reduce nausea, pre and post op anxiety, and can help a patient deal with negative feelings that are associated with health challenges.

What does Reiki feel like?

A session will be a time just for you to be present and relax. Some people experience a warm and tingling sensation. Others fall asleep or go into a meditative state. You may see colors or pictures.

Seeing colors is a great indicator that you are open to the healing that is happening. The colors represent your chakra. Chakras are the energy centers in the body that Reiki helps to open. By doing this, negative thoughts or holding patterns are cleared.

Some people experience a playback of memories in order to work through things. Sometimes these come in to be present with that particular moment. No matter what you may or may not see, come to your session with an open mind and whatever happens will happen. Your session is a safe space and whatever you feel is 100% okay.

What to Expect After Reiki

Every Reiki session is uniquely your own. And each session that you have may be completely different. Depending on what was cleared or worked on, some clients may feel better, or even exhausted, after their session. It’s not uncommon to have a slight headache or a stomach ache when you get done due to moving trapped energy in the body.

Janelle has advice, saying, “I always recommend taking the rest of the day to stay home and rest as much as possible. Drink lots of water and eat a balanced meal. You may have an emotional release after your session and that is normal! Give it love and honor what you are working on to let go of it. Most clients will feel a sense of relief and lighter with each session.”

Feel the Love That Is Reiki

Reiki can be described as pure radiant love that comes from the Universal Life Force Energy. Imagine that coming through the top of the head of the Reiki Master, flowing through their body, and out of their hands. That energy then moves through you and heals your body and mind.

Every Reiki Master has a different style, but Janelle works to learn about you and why you made an appointment. She will ask questions to find out what you’re looking for. You are also welcome to ask questions about her work.  After the session, she will describe what she felt and saw. Many people ask if you undress like you would with massage, but in Reiki, all sessions are done completely clothed

How often should you get Reiki? Honestly, as many times as you’d like!
