Q&A: Skincare

Skin is such an important part of our bodies! Even though it’s something everyone can see, it can be neglected because we’re focusing on our heart, lungs, or brains. What you put inside of your body definitely has an effect on the outside, but what’s outside can also benefit the inside.

We asked one of our estheticians, Kassy, about some of the most common questions she gets when it comes to skincare. Here is what she said.

What order should my skincare go in?

  • Cleanse

  • Exfoliate/Mask (1-3 times per week depending on skin type)

  • Toner

  • Serum

  • Moisturizer

  • Face Oil

  • SPF (Daytime)

If you do not do one of these steps, you may skip to the next. When using multiple serums/oils, use in order from the thinnest to the thickest in consistency as the thinner serums/oils have a harder time getting through the thicker formulations resulting in them sitting on top and not reaching the skin where they can do their job.

Is only rinsing your face with water in the morning really bad?

Yes! Transepidermal Water Loss, otherwise known as TEWL, is the natural process in which water escapes from the top layer of the skin resulting in dehydration. Dehydration can then result in the imbalance of water and oil which the skin needs to function properly.

Reactions from this can be fine lines, dry patches, acne, and a painful extraction process. Simply rinsing your face does not provide any hydration or benefit to the skin. Humectants and emollients found in cleansers are used to bind the water to the skin in order to provide adequate hydration. Using a cleansing oil/balm/milk in the morning will result in clean and hydrated skin without the feeling of over-stripping.

What is your #1 advice to people?

SUNSCREEN!!! As tedious as it may sometimes feel, it is truly the cheapest and easiest anti-aging + anti-damage product. With all the different versions we understand it can be overwhelming to decide which is best for you, but you can come on in and let us help guide you in the right direction!

As a bonus tip, always bring your products down to your neck and chest! The skin on the neck tends to be the first to show signs of aging because it's more delicate than the skin on the rest of the body. With the chest and face quick to follow, a great way to counteract this is to bring each product used on the face down to the neck and chest.

I read the online descriptions for your services. What if I still don’t know which facial I should book?

Call our front desk at (339) 707-0476 and book a consultation! In a quick 15 minutes we will be happy to analyze the skin on your face/neck/chest, explain your skin type, review your concerns/goals and recommend which services we think would be most beneficial for you.

How do I prepare for an upcoming facial?

We recommend discontinuing the use of retinoids and other exfoliants 3-4 days prior to your facial. This gives us the ability to use our professional exfoliants without over-exfoliating, causing skin barrier damage or other redness/inflammatory responses. We also recommend avoiding new products prior to your facial as it can result in adverse reactions making it unclear the cause. Examples of other exfoliants are: Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide.

Are there any medications that may prevent me from receiving a facial?

Unfortunately the use of Tretinoin, Accutane, and other dermatologist prescribed medications may prevent you from receiving a facial. We will always recommend you seek the approval from your dermatologist before continuing with a facial.
