Hydrodermabrasion: A Trending Treatment

Skin imperfections can make people feel self-conscious, but thankfully there are a lot of options available to treat common issues and boost your confidence! We’re doing a series on the skin care services that we provide at Water House Wellness so that you can find the best option for your needs!

Hydradermabrasion is a newer innovation in the skincare industry. It’s a gentle but effective treatment exfoliates and deep cleanses. It results in instant anti-aging effects, revealing better skin texture and a radiant appearance.

Hydradermabrasion vs. Hydrodermabrasion

Hydradermabrasion and hydrodermabrasion are the exact same thing. Different practitioners use different terms (and we aren’t really sure why). We’ll be using the terms interchangeably in this article.

How Hydrodermabrasion Works

Hydrodermabrasion works by basically serving as a power wash for your skin. It uses water and oxygen to give you a deep cleanse. It’s a great option for people with sensitive skin because it effectively exfoliates without the use of harsh abrasive tools or needles. The treatment removes dry, dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin while deep cleaning pores. Under the surface, blood circulation and lymphatic flow are stimulated, giving you an immediate glow. There is no down time and for most people, there are no side effects.

The treatment is great for people with:

  • Sensitive skin

  • Oily skin

  • Concerns about aging

  • Mild to moderate acne

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Large pores

Anyone with the following conditions should avoid hydradermabrasion:

  • Rosacea

  • Eczema

  • Dermatitis

  • Open sores

  • Lupus

  • Psoriasis

  • Cystic acne

Hydrodermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion

Ultimately, hydradermabrasion and microdermabrasion work the same way. The difference is that hydrodermabrasion uses water and microdermabrasion uses a tool containing microcrystals. Both treatments slough off the top layer of skin and unclog pores so that the skin produces collagen and elastin.

Microdermabrasion can be performed on most skin types. But people with very oily skin can end up with overly dry, red, and sensitive skin. It can also irritate those with acne. Hydrodermabrasion is a great alternative for those people because when it comes to exfoliation, water can deliver the same results in a gentler way with fewer side effects.

The main difference between hydradermabrasion and microdermabrasion is the use of serums along with a vacuum-based skin abrasion tip, instead of an abrasive surface. The water not only helps to exfoliate, but it delivers deep cleansing while pushing antioxidant serums into the skin.

Hydradermabrasion Treatment at Water House Wellness

Our board certified estheticians start by learning about your skincare concerns. From there we choose the appropriate nutrient dense serum to best fit your skin type and concerns. The treatment starts with a steaming cleanse and an enzyme exfoliant. Our machine then starts the hydrodermabrasion process by gently suctioning debris for the skin while infusing the appropriate hydro-serum.

Our machine provides an extra treatment that many others don’t. It uses radio frequency to generate light heat that goes deep into the skin to help stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and new cells.

We’ll then use a cold hammer to apply a mask. This further tightens the skin and pores and reduces inflammation or acne. We’ll remove the mask and use an oxygen spray. This step helps to remove free radicals, a major cause of aging and inflammation.

The procedure is pain free and many people say it’s actually very relaxing because it feels like a deep massage to your face.

The treatment takes about an hour and you’ll likely see immediate results. You may have a little bit of irritation and it’s best to avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours following the procedure. You should always use sunscreen daily!

“We recommend that our clients take care of their skin following a hydradermabrasion by moisturizing to lock in hydration and protect the skin barrier. This will also help promote healing while new skin cells are being produced beneath the surface,” says Water House Wellness esthetician Kassy A.
