Doug M.
An orthopedic approach.
Doug is a 2008 graduate of the Salter School in West Boylston, MA. While at the Salter School, he studied under Rich Nadeau of Boston's Exhale and Nikki Campanale of Worcester’s Revitalize, both of whom used the instructive opportunity to impart valuable lessons, gleaned from their years of experience working as massage therapists and beyond the lessons taught by other instructors he studied under. He continually seeks to further his knowledge and skill set by studying the works of the gurus and innovators of his field. Doug's work relies on the inherent flexibility of Swedish massage; there may only be a handful of techniques, but their modality and scalability make them useful for virtually any kind of muscular tension. Every ache becomes a puzzle; from there each variation in technique becomes the next step in solving that puzzle.
Doug has spent the decade of his career working in various spas in Boston, Quincy, and most lately in Cambridge. In Arlington, he's happy to have found a workplace that allows him peace of mind while he offers his work and skills to clients: compassionate coworkers willing to mentor, equitable pay, reasonable policies, and a drastically shorter commute to boot!
Doug is an avid consumer of creative fiction: he favors hard sci-fi, satiric comedy, and crime drama. He's a fan of the literature of Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, and Warren Ellis. He can occasionally be caught babbling extensively on the plot structure and symbolism of films and television series. His sweet-tooth for creative media is only equaled by a more literal sweet-tooth: his love of delectable pastry! He recommends the baklava at Athan's Bakery of Brookline & Brighton if you're inclined to honey and crushed nuts.
Doug’s work feels firm and deliberate, deep and planned.
Doug’s method also tends to eschew a full-body approach in favor of working on specific areas of tension, as well as areas around those that could contribute to the tension of the main focus area. From there, Doug sets himself to patiently wear away at aches until they fade in the pleasant warmth of good massage work. He also incorporates deep tissue, myofascial release, trigger point, and orthopedic techniques as needed, as a holistic and varied approach is often useful.
